Grade 8 Reach Ahead

An early start on high school.

How It Works

When Reach Ahead is the right fit.

Reach Ahead students sit in our regular Grade 9 classrooms and follow the full Ontario curriculum for the credit they are earning. It works best when a student is ready for the work, and three things line up.

Eligibility

Reach Ahead is open to students entering Grade 8 who are academically ready to take on a Grade 9 course alongside their middle-school year. Admissions reviews recent report cards and prior coursework, and talks with the family, before placement is confirmed.

Pace

The credit follows the full Ontario curriculum in the subject, with the same hours of instruction, the same assessments, and the same final mark a regular Grade 9 student would earn. Small-class teaching keeps the room able to slow down or accelerate as the cohort needs.

Outcome

The completed credit is recognised as a Grade 9 credit on the Ontario transcript and counts toward the thirty credits required for the OSSD. Students who continue with us into full-time Grade 9 the following year already know the teachers, the small-class rhythm, and the standard of work expected.

The Subjects

The subjects we offer early.

We offer Reach Ahead in the three subjects most likely to ease the transition into Grade 9. Each is a full Grade 9 credit, taught by the subject specialist who leads the regular high-school course.

English

A close-reading and writing-focused introduction to the Grade 9 English course. Students leave more comfortable with the kinds of essays, novels, and analytical writing that the high-school program builds on.

Mathematics

Grade 9 Mathematics covers the principles a strong high-school program builds on, from algebraic reasoning to linear relations. Reach Ahead students get the room to ask the questions that get glossed over in larger middle-school classrooms.

Science

An introduction to the practice of secondary science, including biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science. Students step into Grade 9 having already done real lab work and scientific writing.

About Reach Ahead

Why we built Reach Ahead.

Grade 8 Reach Ahead joined the school’s offerings in September 2025, the year Vaughan College extended its program to include Grade 8. A strong middle-school year is essential to succeeding in high school and beyond, and a student who is ready can begin earning a real Grade 9 credit a year ahead of schedule, taught by the same teachers who lead our day-school courses.
